Developing UU Leaders With Vision!

The mission of the North East Leadership School (NELS) is to provide training in religious stewardship for the benefit of our Unitarian Universalist congregations and the larger community. We model and create a risk taking, energizing journey of individual growth within a mutually empowering community.

NELS offers a week long experience developing leadership skills through insight, understanding and knowledge. We integrate Unitarian Universalist principles and purposes with management techniques so that our everyday practices become congruent with the values of our religious communities.

Since the first NELS in 1983, more than 600 UUs from more than 90 churches, fellowships, and societies have graduated. NELS welcomes all lay leaders regardless of position or experience level, and also invites and encourages religious professionals to attend as well. NELS is designed to meet the needs of UU leaders and to address the challenges faced at all levels of congregational life.

NELS is firmly rooted in UU history and principles. Theology, worship, and leadership development - the three modules of the NELS curriculum - are presented as integrated elements of a total educational experience. At NELS, who we are as leaders is not separate from who we are as individuals. Our seven UU principles are not separate from the daily management of our congregations.

"This one week experience of conflict management, self- awareness, risk-taking and sharing of beliefs has resulted in my taking more of a leadership role in my local congregation, and feeling more integrated as Jewish Unitarian."
