Frequently Asked Questions

Developing UU Leaders With Vision!

How many participants are there?
Generally, there are between 28 and 34 participants representing congregations in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Eastern Canada.

Is NELS open to fellowships?
Yes, participants from churches, fellowships, and societies are all welcomed.

Who attends NELS?
Church volunteers and sometimes staff of churches attend. Board members and church presidents find NELS especially valuable. Participants are all ages but must be at least 21 to enroll.

Can you attend for only part of the week?
That is not possible. The experiences of each day are structured to build upon each other to provide each participant with an integrated and complete program. Each participant is assigned to three small groups. The success of each group is dependent upon the full engagement of every member. Losing a member during the week or having someone join after the group has bonded would be an unnecessary and unfair burden to the other members of the group. It would also be disruptive to other participants to have someone come for only part of the week.

How many NELS staff are there and what kind of training do they have?
There are nine staff including two ministers. The theology and worship responsibilities are shared by two ministers who are obviously well-educated for their roles. The ministers also act as chaplains for the week and are available to meet with people who have issues arising for the NELS experience. The remaining seven staff have a wide range of training and expertise. All have served in a variety of volunteer roles in their churches. All have attended NELS as participants and have committed to a year-long series of planning and orientation meetings to prepare for their presentations. The staff is dedicated to making NELS a rewarding experience for all participants.

What are the accommodations like?
The Craigville Inn was built in the early 1900's as a Methodist summer camp and maintains its rustic charm. All rooms have sinks with hot and cold running water. Many have toilets and showers. There is no air conditioning. It is advisable to bring a fan.

Are there limits to the number of participants who can attend from one church?
Yes, each church may send no more than 5 participants. If more than 5 from one church are interested in attending the additional members will be placed on a wait list until after registration closes.
