Awards

  • Easy Anthem: $500
  • Medium Anthem: $500
  • Difficult Anthem: $500
  • Honorable mention awards may also be given in each category of difficulty

Submission Requirements:

Musical Settings

  • Composers may submit a maximum of two selections.
  • May include solo or soli sections; may be either accompanied or a cappella.
  • Must be an original composition (not a hymn-anthem or arrangement) from two to five minutes in length.
  • May have been performed.
  • Anthems commissioned by the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network (UUMN) are not eligible for this competition.
  • Text must be suitable for use in Unitarian Universalist congregations, including following commonly accepted UU guidelines for gender-inclusive language; it can be for general, specific, or seasonal use.

Procedures and Manuscript

  • Five quality copies of each anthem must be submitted and received by April 30, 2010. Submissions will be returned only if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
  • CD recording of the composition is desirable, but not required. Cassette tapes and recordings of MIDI “performances” are discouraged.
  • Composer’s identity must not be on manuscript (MS).
  • MS must be accompanied by a cover letter giving the title of the work, the composer’s name and contact information (including home address, e-mail address, telephone number), and category of difficulty. A $10.00 administration fee for each piece must be enclosed.
  • MS must be accompanied by a signed statement giving the UUMN permission to produce enough copies for a performance of winning submissions at the 2010 UUMN Summer Conference by the Festival Choir of Madison. (Information on copyright permission and/or information regarding purchase will be included on those complimentary copies.)
  • MS must be in a clear, readable form; preferably in a professional music notation format (e.g., Finale, Sibelius).
  • The decision of the UUMN in granting these prizes is final.

Composer

  • Composers of any age are eligible to participate.
  • The composer need not be a Unitarian Universalist.
  • Composers will retain and hold copyright in their own name or publishing company.
  • A portion of each winning anthem will be featured in the UUMN Notes Newsletter, accompanied by information as to the availability of purchase or use.
