A Smaller Youth Office Staff

Last spring, the UUA (along with most other not-for-profit organizations) began facing financial difficulties due to the sluggish economy. Major reductions in expenses were necessary, it was decided that in order to minimize layoffs, a number of UUA staff who were naturally leaving their positions (due to retirement, end of contract, etc.) would not be replaced.

Sadly, one of these positions was the January YPS position. The earliest we can hope to see this position reinstated would be January 2006.

This change has finally been realized, and there are now two YPSs instead of three, making a total of four instead of five Youth Office staff. While we have restructured the job description of the YPSs to try to accomodate this reduction in staff, we are still adjusting to the change. We appreciate your patience and support as we adjust to this transition.

Due to budget cuts throughout the UUA, the YRUU publication Synapse will, after 20 years of being a printed magazine, become exclusively an "on-line publication." It is one of many publications of the UUA having to change format due to lack of funding. Those of us in the Youth Office are greatly saddened by this occurrence. We are currently working on compiling the last hard-copy version of Synapse. Thank you to the 15,000 people currently subscribed to Synapse (and all those who came before) who have supported us with their thoughts, writing, art, and dedication. We hope you continue to be avid readers and contributors during our new formatting endeavors.
